The Stone Gallery, Newcastle, where acquired in 1969 and thence by descent to the present owners

Newcastle-upon-Tyne, The Stone Gallery, Sheila Fell, June 1969, no. 13

Woman Driving Cows was one of 22 oils that Fell exhibited at the Stone Gallery in 1969. She was at the height of her expressive power and earlier that year had been elected an Associate of the Royal Academy. Reviewing the exhibition for the Daily Telegraph, F W Fenton noted that Fell, "…discloses a still deeper love and understanding of an area she defines with truth, spirit, and intensity…Her paintings, in their truth to nature, firmly part of the Constable tradition, are filled more with interest in the daily cycle of life instead of a facile beauty”(Daily Telegraph, 4 June 1969).
