Probablement F. von Boetticher, Malerwerke des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts, Dresde, 1891-1901, I, p. 199, n° 45 (sous le titre Schiolden in Lyster; im Stifte Bergen) ;
M. Lødrup Bang, Johan Christian Dahl, 1788-1857, Life and Works, Oslo, 1987, vol. II, p. 295, n° 973 ; vol. III, pl. 416, n° 973.
M. Lødrup Bang has observed that the foreground elements in this painting by Dahl stem from an earlier painting produced on his first return to Norway from Dresden in 1826 (see M. Lødrup Bang, no. 530), now in the National Museum in Oslo. The present version has retained key elements such as the boat and the houses. However, the diagonal chain of mountains brings depth and light to the painting. This new version is more conventional but also more developed, displaying a harmonious balance between natural elements and human structures (see M. Lødrup Bang, vol. I, p. 111).
