After leaving Bergen in 1811, Dahl only went back to Norway five times. The first was in 1826, when he explored the Valdres valley. He probably returned to this location during his four other trips, including in 1844, two years before painting this work. He visited Øylo and Vang with his family and his pupil Peder Balke in July of the same year.
Comparing Dahl’s description of the Øylo farm with the artistic freedom in his approach to the composition, Marie Lødrup Bang found similarities with other works, such as Nordic Mountain Valley (1821) in the Thorvaldsens Museum, Copenhagen (inv. B186), and the 1836 View of Fortundalen (National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo, inv. NG.M.01205) which both share similar characteristics, such as the leaning birch tree in the foreground (M. Lødrup Bang, no. 312 and 805).
