This catalogue offers an infinitely varied array of books and manuscripts dating from the 13th to 21st centuries. No fewer than seven centuries separate the precious portable Bible and Graphein. ΓΡΑφΕΙΝ, a book by the contemporary artist Günther Uecker featuring original embossing inspired by ancient handwriting.

The first section is dedicated to rare manuscripts and books. It includes a rare, thoroughly illuminated portable Bible, three illuminated books of hours, various Ottoman manuscripts, and a rare manuscript from the very early 16th century of Jean de Franchières’ famous falconry treatise from the hunting libraries of Henri Gallice and Marcel Jeanson.

The 17th and 18th centuries are particularly well-explored with two fabulous anthologies of engraving prints: one consecrated to Le Nôtre’s “embroidered” garden beds, the other featuring Italian costumes illustrated by Greuze.

Botany is also showcased through a remarkable album of 146 illustrations – most water-coloured – by Poiteau and Turpin, two of the most eminent botanical artists of the first half of the 19th century. The work covers flowers, fruits, trees and shrubs native both to Europe and exotic climes.

Spain is deservedly represented through Goya, Barceló, García Lorca, and Miró, as well as a manuscript by Borges. The first edition of Goya’s La Tauromaquia rubs shoulders with La Solitude du torero illustrated by Barceló, the series of Miró’s Lézard aux plumes d’or, and a surrealist drawing by García Lorca.

Among the modern illustrated books, Chagall’s kaleidoscopic Cirque – a rare series of lithographies in an exceptional mosaic binding executed by Paul Bonet – echoes another Cirque by Toulouse-Lautrec. Paul Bonet’s bindings appear on four of the books presented.

The European avant-gardes of the last century are represented by a selection of futuristic publications, including the famous Depero Futurista with its bolt-fastened binding. Also featured are publications that convey the aesthetic of the Wiener Werkstätte, such as a rare copy of Die Fläche, surrealist ambitions, with Le Minotaure; and an interesting file on the magazine Front noir. More contemporary contributions include the manuscript of Sallinger by Koltès – one of the most unique playwrights of the late 20th century – keeps company with books illustrated by Gerhard Richter, Daniel Buren, Zao Wou-Ki, Etel Adnan, and more.
