woodblock print, signed Hasui, sealed Kawase, and with Zeppitsu (final work) seal, titled in the left margin as above, publisher's mark Hanmoto Ginza Watanabe Tadasu (Watanabe Tadasu, publisher, Ginza), with carver's mark horiko Okura Hanbei (carver, Okura Hanbei) and and printer's mark suri Horikawa Shozaburo (printer, Horikawa Shozaburo), dated Showa sanjuninen saku (made in 1957), the reverse with further publisher mark hako Mainichi Shinbun Sha (published by the Mainichi Newspaper Company), hand-numbered limited edition seal to verso Sanbyaku goju mai kagiri zeppan, dai nanajuni ban (350 limited edition, number 72), this edition printed 1979


Vertical oban: 39 x 26.1 cm., 15⅜ x 10¼ in.

Hasui’s final work, the first edition of the print was distributed to the artist’s friends and acquaintances during a memorial service on the hundred-day anniversary of his death in 1957.


This present lot is from a special edition limited to three-hundred and fifty impressions issued by the Mainichi Newspaper company in 1979. The edition was released in conjunction with the publication of a catalogue of Hausi’s work edited by the artists main publisher Watanabe Shozaburo’s (1885-1962) son, Watanabe Tadasu (1906-1993).


The Hall of the Golden Hue (Konjikido) is located in Hiraizumi, southern Iwate Prefecture.
