Horizontal oban: 24.9 x 37.3 cm, 9⅞ x 14¾ in.
A man leans over his boat to empty a cooking pot into the calm waters below. As the contents splash into the water, two egrets emerge from within the reeds. The setting is Lake Kasumigaura, where a timber-framed cargo boat or takasebune, filled with goods, reeds and matting, each element carefully picked out in contrasting gradations of blue, is visible. The boat is placed along a diagonal axis within the composition and the position of its bow is mirrored by a distant towering Mount Fuji, its white peak and slopes rising from the landscape below, where atmospheric mist envelopes the houses of Ushibori.
