The design on the postcard is similar to the skull as depicted on the Goldfinger book cover. The four-line manuscript note seems to respond to a disappointed reader of The Spy Who Loved Me, the book where James Bond does not appear until the final third of the narrative. His "next one" refers to On Her Majesty's Secret Service, where Fleming and Bond revert to type.
