The reference 3940 by Patek Philippe, a well-known model among collectors, had a solid caseback upon its release in 1985, consistent with previous Patek Philippe watches. However, at the same time, a very low number of them were also produced with transparent casebacks, known as the reference 3941. It was created due to the high number of requests that Patek Philippe was receiving from customers who wanted to admire the 240Q movement. To cater to demand for both types, Patek Philippe subsequently offered the 3940 with options for both a solid and sapphire display back, discontinuing the 3941 in 1990. While the clear casebacks of the 3940 models display a case number engraving, the 3941's caseback does not bear any markings. Instead, the serial number is engraved on the inside of the case, just below the bezel.
The limited production of the 3941 makes this a rare opportunity to collect one of these early and iconic perpetual calendar wristwatches.
