Since launching their eponymous brand in 2004 having met at famed complication maker Renaud & Papi, Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey have been responsible for the design, development, and manufacturing of some of the most complex and innovative watches of the 21st century. Their watches have been awarded multiple awards from the likes of Grand Prix de l’Aiguille d’Or at the Grand Prix de l’Horlogerie de Genève Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG), with groundbreaking complications like their Double Tourbillon 30° (DT30°), the Quadruple Tourbillon à Différentiel, the Tourbillon 24 Secondes Incliné.
The panicle of their Tourbillon development has been the Quadruple Tourbillon, released at SIHH in 2011, the culmination of six completely new concepts in tourbillon timekeeping introduced by the brand. A year later, Greubel Forsey debuted the Quadruple Tourbillon Secret, a slight design departure from some previous watches. Grubel were known for their open dial work, with their immense technical achievements on display for all to see, but the ‘Secret’ reversed this, with the two double tourbillon’s only visible thought the case back and aperture on the case flank at 7 o’clock. The first double tourbillon rotates at a rate of one rotation every 4 minutes, with the second double tourbillon, inclined at 30 degrees rotates once every minute, connected by a central differential that averages the rate of the tourbillons.
The dial of the watch is multi stepped, with 3 sub registers, the larger register between 7 and 8 oclock displays the progress of the 4 minute double tourbillon (displayed as 240 seconds). The second register at 5 o’clock displays the minute rotation from the second double tourbillon, and the third register between 2 and 3 o’clock shows not just the power reserve, but also one displaying running seconds averaged out across the quadruple tourbillons.
Traditionally, Greubel Forsey make 11 examples of most of their limited edition pieces, but in instance of the ‘Quadruple Tourbillon Secret’ Grubel decided to make only 8 examples of the watch in platinum with silvered dials, and 8 in pink gold with black dial. The current watch, in platinum with silvered dial is numbered 3 of 8 and is complete with its full suite of accessories.
