Rolex is known for using rare materials such as hardstones, meteorite and even fossils in watch dials, a playful twist which stands out from other watch manufacturers. Especially found in Day-date models, the current reference 18238 contains a dial made from ammonite hardstone, an unusual material derived by fossilised mollusk organisms. Extremely rare to come by, it also required the craftmanship from Rolex watchmakers to bring the dial back to life as it is highly fragile to handle. These pieces are becoming very sought-after among collectors since each dial is distinctive and unique.
