Bubba Watson has long been one of the PGA Tour's most colorful characters — and that even extends to the distinctive shade of his equipment. Winning the Masters title in 2012 and 2014, Bubba Watson succeeded in establishing himself as a household name among golf enthusiasts while wielding an eye-catching hot pink driver shaft. Richard Mille, recognizing Watson's talent and unique style, forged a special relationship with the champion before he won his first Masters, creating exceptional timepieces to accompany his journey. The collaboration began in 2011 with the creation of the RM 038, followed by the RM 055 three years later—both meticulously crafted to reflect the essence of their namesake. The latest addition to this collection is the RM 38-02 Tourbillon Bubba Watson, introduced in 2022 as the fourth watch bearing his name. Produced in a numbered limited edition of 50 pieces, it is the first watch to adopt the golfer’s lucky colour.
When adorning the wrist of one of the PGA Tour's longest drivers, a watch must withstand the demanding forces of sudden stops and rapid accelerations. These considerations were paramount in the design of the RM 38-02. Recognizing that a golf ball can experience accelerations of up to 50,000 g's, it was crucial to ensure that the RM 38-02 could endure shocks of at least 10,000 g's. Achieving such resilience within a mere 9.19 mm thickness is a testament to the engineering marvel behind this timepiece. The skilled engineers meticulously balanced its dimensions, striking a harmonious balance between architectural complexity and the compactness required for exceptional shock resistance.
