In 1998, Patek Philippe released reference 5070, their first chronograph only reference in more than three decades. The 5070 featured an iconic double subdial display that would eventually be adopted by its successor, the current reference. Released in 2010 and equipped with Patek Philippe’s first in-house chronograph calibre, the 5170 ushered in the transition from Lemania based to fully in-house movement. This calibre features an instantaneous jumping chronograph minute hand that is a wonder to watch as it seamlessly snaps to the next minute. While the watch was initially only available in either yellow or white gold, a platinum model was introduced in 2017, bringing along an eye-catching blue fumé dial and striking baguette-cut diamond hour markers in lieu of the traditional Breguet or Roman numerals. With a very short production, this platinum variant of the 5170 is a piece of Patek Philippe’s legacy that is coveted by many.
