The 3970 was Patek Philippe’s third perpetual calendar chronograph, succeeding the renowned references 1518 and 2499. First launched in 1986, the 3970 was in ongoing production for nearly two decades. It is the brand’s first perpetual calendar chronograph with a leap year indication. The movement of the 3970, the Lemania 2310 caliber CH 27-70 Q, is the focal point of this timepiece. This was the first non Valjoux based movement ever seen in a Patek Philippe chronograph which gives the piece exceptional collecting value.
Over the span of the production period, collectors can identify differences between the released 3970 references. From the solid screw down case back, leaf shaped hands, and color consistency of the dial and sub-dials, the present specimen can be identified as the second series among the categorized four series.
