The coalition of Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co. could be traced all the way back to 1851, when Antoine Norbert de Patek went on a trip to the United States, looking for the perfect retailer for his highly complicated wristwatch. By chance or by fate, he would run into Charles Lewis Tiffany at his store - and a firm handshake between these two men would open a collaboration for over 170 years. To this date, Tiffany & Co. would remain to be the only US retailer capable of printing their logo on a Patek Philippe wristwatch.
What is even more uncommon is to find the Tiffany logo on the complicated perpetual calendar 3940. Launched in 1985 the reference 3940 is the third automatic perpetual calendar from Patek Philippe, replacing the reference 3450. Three series are identified for the reference, the present example is from the third series, most prominent feature is its swiss logo falling in line with the minute track, in addition to the cross divider at the leap year indicator. Furthermore for this particular example, the inscription of "Tiffany & Co." could be found within the date ring, commemorating the long-standing partnership between the Patek Philippe and the American luxury jewelry retailer. In fact, the present example is the only known platinum 3940 to bear the Tiffany logo on its dial. Preserved with its box and papers, the present example renders a quintessential addition to any watch collection.
