This early Patek Philippe pocket watch is a true masterpiece that embodies both artistry and historical significance. It is a grand complication timepiece, showcasing a remarkable combination of features including a perpetual calendar, a chronograph activated by a push button on top of the crown, a minute repeater activated by a slide on the left side case band, and a moon phase display at 12 o'clock on the dial. Even by today's standards, achieving a minute repeater, perpetual calendar, and chronograph in a single watch is an exceptional feat, making such pieces exceedingly rare.
The fact that this pocket watch has been well-preserved for over 120 years is truly remarkable. Its production dates back to 1896, and it was delivered to Spaulding & Co., an esteemed Chicago retailer often referred to as the 'Tiffany & Co. of the West,' just two years later. Before establishing his own retailer, Mr. Spaulding served as the general representative of Tiffany & Co. in Europe. With a strong connection to the region, Spaulding & Co. also had a branch in Paris, which is why the watch bears the signature ‘Spaulding & Co. Paris’ on the cuvette and movement.
The present lot is offered in overall very good condition, featuring an elegant enamel dial adorned with Roman numerals. We are pleased to offer the piece accompanied by a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming the date of manufacture in 1896.
