In the 1940s, Panerai’s original Mare Nostrum chronograph wristwatches were created for Italian Navy deck officers. Due to the war, these timepieces never made it into production, and were therefore indefinitely in the prototype phase. Approximately 50 years later, the firm reproduced the Mare Nostrum chronograph wristwatch.
Watches that were manufactured up until 1996-1997 when The Vendome Group took over were recognized as ‘Pre-Vendome’ watches. This example from circa 1996 is considered a ‘Pre-Vendome’. The present watch has been preserved in excellent overall condition, and is a rare and desirable collector piece complete with its original accessories. Additionally, the watch includes a vintage Panerai advertisement for the Mare Nostrum.
