The A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk collection is a distinctive and innovative series of watches introduced in 2009. It stands out with its digital hour and minute display, resembling a mechanical interpretation of a digital clock. The design inspiration for the Zeitwerk collection comes from a historic "digital clock" located in the Dresden Semper Opera House. The brand's watchmakers and movement engineers took inspiration from this historic timekeeping device and translated its essence into a contemporary wristwatch. The watch also features a traditional analog subsidiary seconds dial and a power reserve indicator, blending modernity with traditional watchmaking elements.
One unexpected area where A. Lange & Söhne ventured with the Zeitwerk, was in the realm of musical watches in 2011. The present lot, a Zeitwerk Striking Time, is a notable example. The Reference 145.025 features a melodically chiming mechanism that activates once every 15 minutes, acting as a ‘quarter- and hour striker’. It chimes a single low note at the top of every hour as well as a single high note at quarters. This function can be turned on or off, offering the wearer the ability to enjoy the chiming feature at their discretion. The Zeitwerk Striking Time is the world's first mechanical watch with a jumping numerals display and a visible chime. Limited to 100 pieces, the watch is cased in platinum and fitted with a silvered dial.
