The present work of hand-carved flame mahogany exemplifies Alexandre Noll’s mastery of the sculpturing of wood, melding the line between art and furniture. Flanked by latched doors and three drawers at the center, the present work is thought to be unique as it is the only three-door cabinet known to exist by the designer at this point. The cabinet celebrates the integrity of the material, a central tenet of Noll’s practice. The mahogany’s natural color and texture is fully on display, highlighting this pure form of woodworking that he pioneered. With an emphasis on his appreciation for wood, Noll achieves a freedom of form as the organic matter is cherished rather than engineered.

Its large scale and smooth surface encapsulate Noll’s expert technique in cabinetmaking, a construction in which each individual element effortlessly tucks into the next. Developed over years spent in his family’s workshop, Noll’s skill in cabinetry demonstrates a commitment to and esteem for the natural essence of wood. The present cabinet is a treasured example of his intuitive style of furniture making.
