The surrealist artist Roberto Matta developed Margarita, a bronze lost wax casting of a discarded petrol barrel opened-up like a daisy, a found object turned into a tribal throne, in 1969, for the Ultramobile Collection by Simon International of Dino Gavina. The entrepreneur, renowned for its subversive thinking and always at the forefront of design innovation, conceived the collection as art turned into furnishing, thus adapting the surrealist object to daily use as well as bringing surprising and poetic objects in every day’s life.

Indeed, Ultramobile was created in opposition to the rationalism and functionalism which was prevailing in design; this approach, antecedent to the post-modern movement, set the foundations for the development of today’s contemporary design, yet in Gavina’s realm of industrial production. Other artists such as Man Ray¸ Meret Oppenheim, Marion Baruch, Novello Finotti were involved in the collection which was first presented in 1971.

En 1969, l'artiste surréaliste Roberto Matta a créé Margarita, un moulage en bronze à la cire perdue d'un baril d'essence usagé ouvert comme une marguerite, un objet trouvé transformé en trône tribal, pour la collection Ultramobile de Simon International de Dino Gavina. L'entrepreneur, réputé pour sa pensée subversive et toujours à la pointe de l'innovation en matière de design, a conçu la collection comme un art transformé en ameublement, adaptant ainsi l'objet surréaliste à l'usage quotidien et introduisant des objets surprenants et poétiques dans la vie de tous les jours. En effet, Ultramobile a été créé en opposition au rationalisme et au fonctionnalisme qui prévalaient dans le design ; cette approche, antécédente au mouvement post-moderne, a jeté les bases du développement du design contemporain d'aujourd'hui, tout en s'inscrivant dans le domaine de la production industrielle de Gavina. D'autres artistes tels que Man Ray¸ Meret Oppenheim, Marion Baruch, Novello Finotti ont participé à la collection qui a été présentée pour la première fois en 1971.
