Description
Charoite Box
Russia
6¼ x 5⅛ x 2½ inches (15.9 x 13 x 6.35 cm).
This box displays polished swirls of purple, lavender, and white, with subtle amber accents. Loss of three corner stays on underside of lid.
Only found in Siberia and not scientifically described until 1978, charoite is a rare silicate mineral found where syenite has intruded into and altered limestone deposits.
Ranging from soft lavender to deep purple, charoite often exhibits translucency with a near pearl-like luster. These rich colors—coupled with striking swirls and chatoyance—lend it an almost unnatural and otherworldly appearance.
