Louis Icart

Freddie loved the work of Louis Icart and this group of works and those that follow were acquired for his bedroom at Garden Lodge (see lots 721, 723, 725, 727, 729, 731).

With a blend of sensuality, humour and allure, Louis Icart’s artistic repertoire captured the essence of fashionable women and vibrant urban life in Paris and New York. His graphic works were highly

coveted during the Art Deco era and his talent was sought after by prestigious fashion houses and influential French design studios. Within this milieu, Icart’s path intertwined with that of Fanny Volmers, a young woman who not only became his muse, but also his beloved wife. Inspired by the eminent artists of the French Rococo period, including Jean-Antoine Watteau, François Boucher and Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Icart forged his own distinctive style. The Rococo movement celebrated ornamentation and the decorative arts, imbuing them with an air of delicacy, frivolity and a hint of the forbidden. Harmonising with the Art Deco movement that flourished from the 1920s to the 1940s, Icart’s masterpieces radiated with vivid hues, bold geometric designs and intricate details. His artistic influence transcended the border of France, as his works garnered popularity and found their way into the hearts of art enthusiasts in the United Kingdom and the US.
