Freddie Mercury

The Story of the Sultan and Imperial Leather

five pencil and watercolour illustrations mounted on card (36 by 27.5cm. and 55 by 36.5cm., 14⅛ by 10⅞ in., 21⅝ by 14⅜in.)

This pastiche of the 1001 Nights as an advertisement for Imperial Leather soap was almost certainly a piece of college work by the young Freddie Bulsara whilst studying graphics at Ealing College of Art in 1968-69. It was on this course that Freddie fell in with a group of friends who shared his passion for music. One of these fellow students, Tim Staffell, had been playing in bands for several years with a talented young guitarist called Brian May.
