The Reference 5040 remained in production from 1992 until 2007, and was one of the firm's most exceptional timepieces, combining the highly desired and iconic perpetual calendar with a distinctive and elegant tonneau form case reminding some creations of the 1920's and 1930's.
The white gold version was adorned either with a silvered or a more sought-after black dial, like on the present piece. It has applied concentric Arabic numerals contained in a circular rail track for a perfect readability. This combination makes this lot one of the most attractive and practical liveries created for that reference.
Interestingly, the Reference 5040 is the only tonneau-shape perpetual calendar serially produced by Patek Philippe, making this elegantly understated model particularly collectible.
