The history of the Ranger dates back to 1929 when Hans Wilsdorf registered the name, just three years after the creation of Tudor. As a true visionary, Mr. Wilsdorf wanted a name that represented the adventure and a wrist companion that would be robust and reliable to accompany its wearer. As such, in the early years, it was not used for a dedicated model but on some different references. The 1952 British North Greeland expedition was a turning point in the history of the Ranger. Tudor equipped their members with Oyster Prince watches. Though the pieces did not bear Ranger on their dials, they captured the essence of the name. A few years later, in the mid 1960’s, Tudor finally launched its first official Ranger model with a very similar aesthetic to the Rolex Explorer that was highly popular after the conquest of the Mount Everest in 1953. Unlike the Rolex model, the Tudor Ranger was available without or with a date indication, like the present lot. After 1969, Tudor completely replaced the Rose by the Shield as the logo of the brand, further enhancing its robust image.

This lot presents all the distinctive characteristics of the model, with a black matte dial and Explorer indexes as well as the date in red. Its 34.5 mm slim case on Oyster bracelet confers the watch an unparalleled comfort.

The Reference 7996 is the original Oysterdate Ranger dial with a date indication. It had a very short production run in the mid 1960’s. Similarly to the Rolex 5500 produced during the same period, only a fraction of the Tudor 7996 was fitted with Ranger Explorer dials, dramatically increasing the desirability of this lot.

Rarely appearing at auction, the Ranger offers all the characteristics of a highly collectible vintage watch combining the reliability and sport spirit with an elegant touch, making it perfect for every occasion.
