The Reference 1513 was produced during ten years only, from 1941 to 1951. It is typical of the sober elegance of the pieces produced during these troubled years. However, its oversized diameter of 35mm added some character to the piece, which was nicely balanced by the details of the case band as well as the thin curved lugs. Its large size allowed Patek Philippe to produce a couple of examples with cloisonné enameled dials.
While the model was in majority produced in stainless steel, yellow and pink gold, the rarest version is by far the present one, combining pink gold and stainless steel.
Only two examples are known to exist, which makes this present lot an extremely desirable opportunity.
To differentiate the standard version from the two tone one, Patek Philippe described the last as “1513-1”. The two-piece case was made by Wenger (master key 1), an historical and highly regarded supplier of Patek Philippe.
The engraved and enamel dials were made by Stern Frères. This one, alternating applied Arabic quarters and elongated baton indexes with large subsidiary seconds, is nicknamed “salmon” by collectors to refer to its pink tone, nicely echoing the pink gold lugs.
The 1513 was made in two series, based on the movement. This one is part of the first series with the calibre 12 120 as opposed to the later ones equipped with cal. 12 400.
This first series Patek Philippe 1513 with a steel and pink gold case, making it one of the two known, and a salmon dial is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a very rare and special oversized Calatrava.
