The ultimate evolution of the lineage of the hand-wound Rolex Daytonas was the references 6263 and 6265, produced from 1969 to 1988. The former came with a black acrylic bezel, as in this instance, and the latter with a stainless-steel bezel.
Superseding References 6262 and 6264 and following the success of the experimental 6240, the 6263 and 6265 models are distinguished from their preceding references by the introduction of larger, screw-down chronograph pushers and winding crown. As the first Rolex waterproof chronograph models, they had the addition of the 'Oyster' designation on their dial. The introduction of these attributes marked the standard for all future references and are still utilised on Daytona models to this day.
During its production period, the dial of the 6263 saw different evolution.
The most sought-after one is the Big Red floating dial, that can be admired on the present piece. The Big Red refers to the Daytona signature over the 6 o'clock register. It differs from the Small Red Daytona signature, generally found on the last production batch or as service pieces, which does not go beyond the first mark on each side of the 12-hour marker on the register.
The floating refers to the space between the register at 6 o'clock and the Daytona signature, that is larger than on the normal Big Red. It gives the impression that the red Daytona is floating between the center of the dial and the register.
While the very vast majority of the 6263 show signs, and sometimes more, of polishing and have seen their original design altered, this example is a true rarity and has an incredibly crisp case with very sharp angles.
The watch retains its original matching bezel, pushers as well as its 78350 bracelet with its correct 571 endlinks.
This watch is offered on the market on behalf of the family of the original owner, making this opportunity even more exciting.
