In 1959, Rolex launched reference 1016, a coveted reference which was in production until 1989. Consequentially, there were many variations but all share a distinctive black dial with Arabic numerals at three, six and nine o'clock. The initial 1016 had a gilt glossy dial, being replaced around 1967 by a matte dial, which makes the present lot one of the first examples of the matte dial.
