The Rolex GMT-Master is a true icon for the brand. Born out of the jet-age in the 1950s, it became the official watch of Pan American World Airways with whom it was developed. Hammer’s example dates to 1965 and is a gilt-dial example. Gilt dials are prized by collectors for their deep luster and jewel like quality. Unique to only the earliest of Gilt Dial GMT-Masters, is the use of a small triangle GMT hand. This small hand was a holdover from the first iteration of the GMT-Master before being changed out for a larger hand that made it easier to use the secondary time zone function at night. With attractive patina to the aluminum bezel, and a period Rolex jubilee bracelet – it’s easy to see the appeal of these watches.
