Introduced in 2006 and celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Nautilus, Patek Philippe released the reference 5980 along with the reference 5711 and 5712 at Basel. These releases marked a new era for one of the brands most celebrated and coveted ranges. The 5980 represented the first time that the Nautilus was fitted with a chronograph complication, utilizing the brand's very first in-house self-winding chronograph cal. CH 28-520. Discarding the conventional chronograph dial layout, Patek instead introduced a simplified design using a co-axial subsidiary dial combining all registers into one.
Originally, the model was available in steel with a black/blue dial but was later followed by a silvered dial in 2012. Precious metal variants were also available, notably a pink gold version coming on either a strap or bracelet.
The current 2011 example comes with its original box and papers, as well as a plethora of other accessories for any collector to enjoy. Offered in very good condition, combined with practicality both in design and usability has meant that the reference 5980 in steel has become one of the most desirable models in one of Patek Philippe’s stable of watches.
