2 volumes, 8vo. Bound from the parts, with stab holes visible, 23 wood-engraved plates and 32 initial vignettes by G.H. Thomas, without the single leaf of advertisements at the end of volume II; glue on text block a little dry. Publisher's blue sand-grained cloth by Cawthorn & Hutt, upper cover blocked in gold with vignette of a church door, spine gilt with serpent design; spine sunned, very light shelfware. Collector's quarter morocco clamshell box.


First edition, the final in the Chronicles of Barsetshire series.


When speaking about this work in his autobiography, Trollope called it "the best novel I have written."
