Description

Kennedy, Jacqueline

A collection of three letters signed ("Jackie") to Nancy P. Schill

Comprising: Autograph letter signed, three pages (195 x 145mm). Blue paper headed "Hyannis Port, Massachusetts", envelope postmarked October 3 1960; fold marks, envelope a little soiled. Apologizing for missing her visit because she had "drugged herself heavily + settled down for a long afternoon's nap", noting her house was on the market, sharing her condolences for the "painful period" Schill was experiencing, "Before you know it you will be out of the woods & into a clearing & life will look bright again.", anticipating her departure from Hyannis Port back to Washington, "I go back to DC tomorrow which I hate to do", referring to ongoing election campaign (John F. Kennedy would win the presidency on November 8th), referencing her pregnancy (John F. Kennedy Jr. would be born on November 25th).

Typed letter signed, one page (239 x 154mm). Written February 27 1961, paper headed "The White House, Washington", envelope postmarked March 1 1961; fold marks, stamp removed. Congratulating Schill on her "downright impressive" new job, sharing news of her two children, referring to her ongoing project to restore the White House, thanking her for a gifted picture frame.

Typed letter signed, one page (239 x 154mm). Written August 11 1961, at Hyannis Port, paper headed "The White House, Washington", envelope postmarked August 11 1961; fold marks, stamp removed. Thanking Schill for "a dreamy wonderful frame for Baby John!", commending her "business career", stating "I hope you will achieve your goal of being a Registered Representative, because you will certainly be the prettiest one in Wall Street history".

Charming correspondence from the time immediately preceding and during the Kennedy's tenure at the White House.

Nancy P. Schill and her family owned a summer house in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, in the early 1960s, and were neighbors of John and Jackie Kennedy who holidayed at the Kennedy Compound. Jackie and Nancy became friends, and Jackie would come to Nancy's house to smoke cigarettes and watch The Tonight Show on television (these activities being disapproved of by Mrs. Kennedy's father-in-law). Caroline Kennedy was the playmate of Nancy's son (in her August 11 letter, she adds "Caroline sends her love to Nicky").
