8vo. Half-title. Publisher's cream cloth by M&E Case, cover blocked in gilt with floral design, spine gilt; corners bumped, spine a little worn. Collector's quarter morocco slipcase with blue cloth chemise.


First edition, first issue, signed by the author to first free endpaper, "Yours faithfully, Thomas Hardy" — one of 2,000 copies printed.


A collection of short stories about duchesses, ladies and countesses, as told by each member of a club.


George Barr McCutheon (1866-1928), the American novelist and playwright, was the author of the Grautsark series and the comedic novel Brewster's Millions.
