Large 8vo (215 x 145 mm). “The Great Hoggarty Diamond” advertisement preceding illustrated frontispiece and title, 39 steel and wood plates by the author including the "Marquis de Steyne" on p.336, rustic font header on p.1, “Mr. Pitt” on p.453; some scattered foxing primarily to plates and adjacent pages, lacking publisher's ads at end. Full red morocco, bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, spine with raised bands in six compartments second and third gilt-lettered, gray endpapers.
First edition, handsomely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, of Thackeray's great novel, with the picture of the Marques of Steyne which was suppressed in later editions.
