Description

the lobed body with a repoussé chimera, alkonost, centaur, pegasus, gryphon, peacock and view of the city of Sinop, the lid decorated with scrolling foliage, diamond points, the polylobed display decorated with further foliage, the upper edge of the bowl and the border of the cavetto on the tray applied with a silver-gilt inscription in Old Slavonic explicating the presentation of this piece by Emperor Alexander III to the sailors of the Battleship Sinop in commemoration of the beginning of construction of the Ekaterina II class battleship in 1883, struck throughout with maker's mark and initials in Cyrillic as well as with the Imperial Warrant, 84 standard, with further French import marks
