Description
NIKE, NIKE VARSITY JACKET, SIZE XL
Wool, Leather
Circa 1990s
In 1990, Nike opened Niketown in Portland, Oregon. The store, which was created as a blueprint for other Nike stores across the country, was perceived as so unique that locals would often bring out-of-towners to visit.
Upon entering the store, patrons were welcomed by sculptures depicting two iconic Nike athletes, Bo Jackson, and Andre Agassi. Also featured was a statue of Michael Jordan in mid-flight. A noteworthy feature was the transportation of merchandise from the basement to the sales floor through large clear tubes, reminiscent of the futuristic conveyance depicted in The Jetsons cartoon.
This varsity jacket, made in the USA, features a black wool body and leather sleeves. A Nike logo is featured on the chest and “NIKETOWN” is spelled out on the back. Nike stores no longer go by the name Niketown- making the jacket all the more rare.
Nike, Inc., originally founded as Blue Ribbon Sports in 1964 by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight, has evolved into a global powerhouse in the athletic footwear and apparel industry. Renamed Nike in 1971, the brand began releasing products in 1972. The company's early success was propelled by innovations like the waffle sole and endorsement deals with star athletes, such as Michael Jordan. Over the years, Nike expanded its product lines, ventured into digital technologies, and focused on sustainability and social responsibility, solidifying its status as a leader in the sports and fashion sectors. Today, Nike's iconic Swoosh logo and commitment to innovation and style continue to make it a dominant force in the global market, worn by athletes and individuals worldwide.
