The arms are those of Ogilvy for David Ogilvy (1785-1849), great-grandson and heir male of the 3rd Earl of Airlie, he was able to inherit in 1826 as 4th Earl of Airlie, when Parliament restored the title which had been forfeit after the 1715 Jacobite rising. He was sometime Captain of the 42nd Highlanders, Lord Lieutenant of county Forfar, and Representative Peer for Scotland 1833-1849.
This cruet is part of a larger commission passed by Lord Ogilvy, probably on his marriage in October, 1812 to Clementina, only daughter and heir of Gavin Drummond, of Keltie, co. Perth. It included a group of Storr silver sold by descendants with Matthew Barton, London, 23 November 2016: a pair of salvers, Storr, 1810 (lot 385); a waiter, Storr, 1812 (lot 373); a pair of mustard pots, Storr, 1812 (lot 374); and a sugar bowl and milk jug, Storr, 1814 (lot 375). A matching set of eight wine coasters, Storr, 1812, was with Koopman Rare Art, London, in 2017, and two jugs, 1813-14, were sold Sotheby’s, London, 17 November 2010, lot 52.
