Description
A Chantilly 'Bleu Mosaïque et Or' Plate, Circa 1753-60
the center painted with a scene of a stag being attacked by hounds, within a foliate scroll cartouche, reserved by a bleu mosaïque ground enriched with gilt dots, the border with six further cartouches alternating by landscapes with red-roofed houses and hunting vignettes, the shaped rim with a band of gilt cross-hatching, hunting horn mark over letter R in underglaze-blue, gilt letter B, incised hunting horn mark.

A small number of plates and other serving forms of this type have survived, all painted with animal or hunting scenes on a bleu mosaïque-ground. As there are slight differences between the subject matters and in the gilded borders, it is likely that at least three services were produced with this form of painting.
Among the known pieces, which may be closely associated to the present plate:
-an oval stand, is in the Forsyth Wickes Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, acc. no. 65.1919;
-a plate, was with Dragesco-Cramoisan, Paris, and subsequently sold at Christie's, New York, May 21, 2003, lot 126, then entered the Valentine Collection and sold, Christie's New York, October 12, 2005, lot 37
-two plates were in the Marguerite Glover Collection, New York, sold, Parke-Bernet Galleries, Inc., New York, March 22-23, 1957, lot 330. One of the plates features a variation of the stag scene from the present plate.
A plate, without the cross-hatched gilt border and therefore likely from second service, was in the Mrs H. Dupuy Collection, sold, Parke-Bernet Galleries, Inc., New York, April 2-3, 1948, lot 180. Several plates painted with bird subjects likely represent a third service, two such plates are at Château de Chantilly, inv. nos NA 87-88.
