Two silver-gilt candlesticks, one unmarked, the other Robert Garrard, London, 1840
in the form of a seated sheep-skin-clad figure holding a shell or horn, with finger raised to his mouth as if pondering, with unscrewing nozzles engraved with the crest and coronet of George Spencer, 4th Duke of Malborough (1739-1817) and the monogram of George III within the motto of the Order of the Garter below a royal crown

The current lot is one of three pairs known in this model, all with the mark of Robert Garrard (apart from the present single unmarked example) and ranging from 1813 to 1840. The are signs that the 1840 Garrard example here has been cast from the unmarked example which may be the original for the other two pairs.
