An Architectural Elevation of a Neoclassical Building in the manner of Schinkel

Ink and wash on paper

height 20 ¾ in.; width 63 in.

52.5 cm; 160 cm

Drawn as a side view elevation, this monumental edifice is evocative of the Schauspielhaus theatre constructed between 1818 and 1821 in the Gendarmenmarkt in central Berlin to the design of the neoclassical architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841). Severely damaged in World War II, it has since been rebuilt and now serves as a concert hall.
