A French Silver Yacht Trophy Wine Cooler after Meissonnier, Bointaburet, Paris, Circa 1900
of heavy weight and baluster form, constructed of cast and chased panels of Regence ornament, the handles formed as a twin-tailed mermaid and a triton seated on shells and seaweed upholding entwined dolphins, the sides applied with baroque cartouches with engraved inscriptions, all on paneled ground with diaper, matted, and fluted surfaces, marked on base rim, with plated liner

The inscription on one side reads “GRAND PRIX du YACHT CLUB de FRANCE”. The other side is engraved with the Badge of the Yacht Club of France.
This design is based on the champagne coolers made in 1723 for M. e Duc de Bourbon by Juste Aurele Meissonnier. This well-known design by Meissonnier, engraved by Huquier, is reproduced in Peter Fuhring, Juste-Aurele Meissonnier, Un genie du rococo, 1695-1750, vol. II, p. 343. On the next page Fuhring shows the present model by Boin-Taburet, first shown at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1889.
The Yacht Club de France was established in 1867, given royal patronage by Emperor Napoleon III. In 1891 a new club was founded, Union des Yachts Francais, Societe pour la Navigation de Plaisance and the two merged in 1907. Among other competitions, the Club runs, in conjunction with the Yacht Club Italiano, the Giraglia-Rolex Regatta, from St. Tropez, past Giraglia on the northern coast of Corsica, to Genoa.
