A pair of German silver-gilt beakers, Paul Solanier, Augsburg, 1700-1705
each engraved with two medallions surrounded with scrolls, one engraved with a crossbowman hunting a giant stork (ostrich ?) with inscription OGNI PESO HA CONTRA PESO and a dancing harlequin with DULCE EST DESIPEPERE IN LOCO, the other of a man falling into a river because of a broken rope, inscription IN VIIS TUIS AMBULA and a rocky landscape with a man holding a rope and the inscription UIS CONSLII EXPERS MOLE RUIT SUA, each base engraved 106 499 126 and 706499126

The decorative art of the Baroque period favored depictions of moralizing character. They often contained creative allusions to the possible misfortunes of life that befall people when they overestimate their powers. Thus, a man shooting a stork with a bow and arrow or a jester surrounded by children are depicted on these beakers. Solanier was inspired by copperplate engravings, which he then reworked in his own manner.

L'art décoratif baroque privilégiait les représentations à caractère moralisateur. Elles contenaient souvent des allusions créatives aux possibles malheurs de la vie qui touchent ceux qui surestiment leurs forces. Ainsi, un homme tirant sur une cigogne avec un arc et des flèches ou un fou entouré d'enfants sont représentés sur ces timbales. Solanier s'est inspiré de gravures sur cuivre qu'il a réinterprétées à sa manière.
