Cleveland Institute of Art, Julian Stanczak: 50 Years Retrospective, August - October 2002

A product of Stanczak’s Crest series, Topographic Line I is an enlivening illustration of Stanczak’s illusory envisioning of geographic and organic space. Stanczak plays with the visual behavior of lines and angles, composing a bewitching sensation of movement.

Discussing the line-based nature of his art in a 2012 interview with Geoform, Stanczak remarked: “Geometry satisfies logic first—and it is almost timeless. The organic distribution of lines in these paintings is a departure for me from mental acrobatics.”
