Hélène Leloup (b. 1927) is one of the art world’s true pioneers, bringing together a spirit of adventure, a detailed anthropological approach and deep knowledge to become one of the foremost specialists in African and Oceanic art in Paris, New York and beyond. This summer in Paris, and next year in New York, Sotheby’s will offer some 100 exceptional works from Leloup’s personal collection, shining a light on her voyage of discovery over seven decades, and offering collectors the opportunity to acquire some of the most important works of their kind in private hands. The offering will include African art, notably a significant corpus of Dogon art from Mali – of which Leloup is one of the greatest specialists worldwide – as well as some of the modern and contemporary drawings, paintings and sculptures she paired alongside these in her home in Paris. Together the sales will represent one of the most important moments in the history of this market.

Née en 1927, Hélène Leloup est une véritable pionnière du monde de l’art. Son goût de l’aventure, sa démarche anthropologique poussée et ses connaissances approfondies l’ont hissée au rang des plus grands spécialistes de l’art africain et océanien à Paris, à New York et bien au-delà.

Le 21 juin, Sotheby’s Paris accueillera le premier volet de deux ventes aux enchères consacrées à la collection personnelle d’Hélène Leloup. Ces deux volumes forment une anthologie singulière d’œuvres africaines et océaniennes, aux côtés d’œuvres d’art moderne et contemporain. Ils retraceront les 70 années d’histoire de la collectionneuse, mettant en lumière son parcours, son regard unique, ainsi que certaines œuvres parmi les plus importantes en mains privées. Avant la vente, les lots seront exposés au public à New York, Bruxelles, Londres et Paris. Afin de saluer le rôle considérable joué par Hélène Leloup pour faire rayonner l’art africain aux États-Unis, le Volume II se déroulera chez Sotheby’s New York en 2024. Ces deux ventes représenteront l'un des moments les plus importants de l'histoire du marché de l’Art Africain.
