A set of twenty-three George III mahogany dining chairs, late 18th/early 19th century, possibly Scottish


the backs with three paterae-centred splats and edged with ebonised grooves, covered with later close-nailed leather upholstery, on turned tapering front legs and splayed rear legs, one with a label to the underside reading HOULT'S LTD., / DEPOSITORIES. / Q9113, some seat rails stamped with journeyman initials HM

At Torhousemuir, South West Scotland;

Acquired with the house when the estate was bought by Lt. Col. Sir Archibald Woollaston White, 4th Bt. (1877–1945);

thence by descent to his son, Sir Thomas Astley Woollaston White, 5th Bt. (1904-1996);

thence by descent to the present owner.

A comparable set of chairs resembling this model very closely can be seen pictured in Shardeloes in an issue of Country Life from 5th July 1913.
