maker's mark GS, Palermo, 1737


the triangular bases with scrolls and foliate decoration, engraved on one side with the arms of the Cottone family, St Catherine and a town's coat of arms, the stems with baroque decoration,


height 39cm., 15 1/4in.

Gifted by the family of Giuseppe Gaetano Cottone (1703-1757) to the Church of Santa Caterina, Palermo, on the occasion of his marriage to Isabella Tarallo in 1737,

Arthur Hamilton Lee, 1st Viscount Lee of Fareham (1868-1947),

gifted to the Nation in 1921,
