Description

A pair of Victorian novelty silver table lighters or inkstands

Charles & George Fox, London, 1844 and 1846

modelled as Mr Punch on wooden plank effect bases, the hats hinging open,

height 17.5cm., 6 3/4in.

582gr., 18 1/2oz.

The design for these lighters seem to come from a lithograph by William Sharp (1803-1875) on the cover of sheet music for Quadrille de Punch (see image).

If intended to be an inkstand, the empty space between Mr Punch's hands could be to hold a pen or quill.
