A Brussels Mythological Tapestry, after Designs by Jan Van Orley and Aurel Augustin Coppens, Early 18th Century
depicting the triumph of Jupiter from the series The Triumph of the Gods, probably woven by Urban and Daniel Leyniers and Hendrik Reydams the Younger. Signed V. L. R with the Brussels's town mark woven in the lower right corner

The signature "V. L. R" probably refers to the workshops of Urban and Daniel Leyniers and Heinrik Reydams, all of whom signed a collaboration contract in 1712. The present tapestry belongs to a series known as the "Triumph of the Gods," which was designed by Jan Van Orley; the first set was completed for the town hall of Ghent in 1717.
The backgrounds for Van Orley's extensive designs were often drawn by Aurel Augustin Coppens (see D. Heinz, Europäische Tapisseriekunst des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts, Vienna, 1995, pp. 218-219 and p. 232).
