This type of wine retriever is one of the earliest examples of applying the principles of atmospheric pressure into day-to-day life during the Warring States period in China. Liquid can be drained upwards into the vessel through the hole at the bottom of the hollow container, and a transfer with no drainage is achieved when a thumb covers the hole at the top of the tube. 

Compare a similar bronze wine retriever unearthed from a Warring States-period tomb in 1992, now in the collection of Zibo Museum.
