A gold and enamel quarter repeating automaton watch with jacquemarts bearing the signature Berthoud, Paris

Circa 1805, no. 83530


• Movement: gilded, full plate, verge escapement, three-arm balance, decoratively pierced and engraved balance bridge, silver regulation plate, fusee and chain, turned pillars, two polished steel hammers repeating on coiled gongs, numbered 83530 and bearing the signature Berthoud à Paris

• Dial: white enamel dial, Arabic numerals, outer minute ring, applied vari-colour gold Jacquemarts figures striking bells in tandem with repeat work, a dog beneath, against a blue enamel background, enamel repair to lower edge

• Case: gold, milled band, plain polished back, pendant locking slide to left of pendant, inside back with French control marks for 1798-1809 and numbered 3630 beneath L within lozenge-shaped cartouche, gilt-metal cuvette bearing the signature Berthoud à Paris and numbered 83530
