A fine gold and pearl-set verge watch

Circa 1830


• Movement: gilded, verge escapement, plain three-arm balance, decoratively pierced and engraved balance bridge, silver regulation plate, fusee and chain, cylindrical pillars, signed Balsiger & Fils à Genève 

• Dial: gold, engine-turned centre, stippled chapter ring with polished Roman numerals, outer minute ring, dial edge with applied vari-colour gold decoration, aperture for winding, blued steel hands

• Case: gold, the back set with graduated pearls and seed pearls radiating outwards from an upper pearl-set roundel, seed-pearl set bezels to front and back interspersed by split-pearls, pendant set with pearls and applied vari-colour gold decoration, inside back stamped GN

Jean-Jacob Balsiger was originally from Niedermuhlern in the canton of Berne. In 1791 he had settled in Geneva with his two sons (see: O. Patrizzi, Dictionnaire des Horlogers Genevois, Antiquorum Editions, 1998, p. 88). A watch with similar signature panel to the dial by Balsiger & Fils can be found at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (object BK-VBR-350-A).
